Ƶ’s Division of Student Affairs and Division of Academic Affairs has received an anonymous grant for more than $764,000 to fund a new, comprehensive mentoring program called “The Mentoring Project at Ƶ,” designed to assist with improving student success.
“Mentoring builds strong connections between students, faculty and staff,” said Edward Pratt, Ph.D., dean of undergraduate studies. “The mentoring project complements the tremendous strides Ƶ has already made in the area of academic advising, helping to ensure that students stay in college, and continue their progress toward graduation.”
Ƶ faculty and staff, as well as upper division and graduate students, will be trained as mentors to first-year college students, with an emphasis on minority students and those in STEM majors. By 2017, the program also will include the mentoring of incoming transfer students.
“Ƶ has not had the capacity to implement this type of structured program in the past,” said Jennifer Bebergal, assistant dean for retention at Ƶ’s Center for Learning and Student Success. “This funding will give us the ability to reach those who could most benefit from mentoring and help them connect with the best mentoring opportunity to fit their needs.”
The grant will fund administration for the project, as well as for training and professional development, mentoring events, mentor recognition, course materials, and stipends for peer mentors.
