A team of students were recently named Division III state champions in the State Commissioner’s Academic Challenge at Walt Disney World in Orlando.

The Ƶ High team consisted of Yasmine Zerrouki, Mauricio Barba da Costa, Pedro Almeida, Ajay Desai, Sajeev Sarkar and Lili Mueller.

The goal of the tournament is to provide a prestigious academic arena in which Florida’s academically talented high school students are recognized.

The challenge is a highly academic statewide high school tournament inaugurated in 1986. Each team consists of six members and a coach. Players are asked questions from the areas of: language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art, theater, music, world languages, physical education, health and medicine, and technology.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment by a dedicated team and their passionate coaches,” said Sherry Bees, principal/director of A.D. Henderson and Ƶ High School. “Even with their rigorous academic schedule, our students seek out opportunities to participate in a variety of competitions. Ƶ High School will continue to support and provide all students with the infrastructure to allow them to pursue and partake in these challenges.”

A total of 41 districts competed at this year’s games and Ƶ High’s team competed against 16 other teams.
